The Hands Behind the Work

Pedro Hernández
& Isabel Cervantes

In the highlands of Michoacán, in the small town of San José de Gracia, lives Pedro Hernández and Isabel Cervantes — a celebrated ceramicist couple working in the tradition of barro vidriado.

As descendants of the Purépecha people, Pedro and Isabel learned ceramics through the rhythm of daily work, the guidance of elders, and the language of the land.

Alongside their children, they create art that holds both history and imagination. Made from local mountain clay, shaped entirely by hand, and fired in wood-fueled ground kilns.

A process rarely practiced today. Some pieces take weeks to complete and stand over a meter tall.
